The moon landing in 1969 was a time for celebration alongside advancing technology to the point of being able to explore beyond the boundaries of Earth's atmosphere itself. The televised event was watched from start to finish by the whole world. It's why the massive ship that followed hours later was such a shock. Not only was it slowing down just outside of the atmosphere, it wasn't alone. The blacking out of Earth's satellite array would lead to 51 hours of panic and global blackout before the invasion began. Ground zero for their landing — Los Angeles, California. The turning point arrived when alien forces found surprising resistance due to the technological advances of Earth's defensive systems, holding out for weeks and just as the tides seemed to be turning back - the United States and its allies pushed back the invaders over several days.
The eventual defeat of the invaders left large amounts of debris and alien wreckage, and exposure of the land and sea led to further contaminating factors that would have effects from that point on. The calamity was cleared in months, and life went on in the City of Angels all while remnants of the invasion was sewn deep into the city's ecosystem.
This was the first encounter with the beings known as Evolvers. The evolutionary stage had been jumpstarted, leaping ahead by strides and bounds to the Boyle Heights neighborhood -- ground zero of the alien invasion and now home of the largest conclave of Evolvers in their own sprawling district. Los Angeles was one of the first major cities to accept and recognize the beneficial factors of having such beings in their city. Their whole district is a beacon of renovation and gentrification, the newest and nicest establishments, parks, restaurants, and affordable housing right to the gleaming newly constructed towers of the very few elite and wealthy.
Evolver is an original superhero game inspired by Marvel's X-Men fandom, and open to all Greater Marvel Universe characters within reason. Our gameplay follows the lives of those newly bestowed with mutant abilities known as Evolvers. While ~evolver takes hints from canon, the main storyline is indeed our own. There are no superheroes, villains or teams. Charles Xavier did not secretly harbor children in a mutant school to train them to risk their lives for humans.
These are the stories of people and Evolvers living in day to day situations, trying to pay rent, making time for hookups while also trying not to blow another hole in their ceiling. However, something's always looming that could give these newly-manifested superhumans a chance to do more, to be more for the right or wrong reasons. What choices will you make and what part will you play in this new world order?
We're a group of writers who believe role play is about collective world building, collaboration, and above all, having fun. We aim to create a platform for sharing ideas and inspiring others. Friendliness, community spirit and inclusiveness are at the core of our values.
Widely known as SUPE CITY, this community of Evolvers and humans was established in and around the Boyle Heights neighborhood, a working class neighborhood directly to the east of downtown Los Angeles. It is one of the most low income neighborhoods in the county, but rising gentrification along with the city's commitment to create a welcoming atmosphere for Evolvers has pushed the neighborhood's infrastructure to come a long way from being one of the city's most deprived communities to a growing business district with shopping malls, a hospital and an accredited college.
CEREBRA is a social networking website and application that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. Evolvers who have manifested their abilities will suddenly find this app downloaded on applicable devices. Like many social media platforms, the site is able to sync with other social media platforms to communicate with non-Evolvers. Though, the site promises that all submitted information and conversations will be kept private from outside entities including the feds.
THE SENTINEL is a non-profit organization that offers support to superpowered beings that cannot control their powers or are having trouble reconciling their identities with their abilities. They offer 24/7 phone support, therapy sessions, rehabs, wellness studies and more with sites around Supe City. The group's mission is to encourage progress, peace and fairness to unite Evolvers and humans. Anyone, both human or Evolver, can become a volunteer, and are urged to recruit as many Evolvers as possible to assist. However, most people don't trust the organization's intentions.
Established in 1963 in a small building east of Downtown LA, CLAREMONT COLLEGE has grown in both its educational purpose and infrastructural blueprint in what's now Supe City. As of the Fall 2023 semester, Claremont College became the first college in the country to offer a mixed curriculum for both powered and non-powered students. Aiming for a rich and harmonious higher education experience, traditional courses and majors are available, as well as ones related to superpowers and the biological understanding of mutation. While Evolvers are relatively new, the research behind the alien invasion and radiation is not.
Aptly coined the DISTRICT X Police Station, it is in fact the Hollenbeck Community Police Station located in Boyle Heights just east of downtown. LA's mayor and police chief agree Evolvers should be welcomed amongst police and firefighter ranks, if they so desire after passing basic training. There is yet no proper protocol surrounding the use of powers while Evolvers are on duty, but legislation is already being drafted by local politicians to "keep their citizens safe" from superpowered law enforcement. The station encompasses the communities of El Sereno, Lincoln Heights and Boyle Heights, and is under the jurisdiction of Central Bureau.
Founded in 2012 as another Hollywood gossip website, in recent months MOJO MEDIA has exploded as an umbrella communications company with its original gossip digital newspaper as well as cable news programs and podcasts, and tv sitcoms. They are not shy about publishing anything they know and find out about Evolvers, and while known to celebrate superhero accolades, the company also thrives on scandals and gossip. Because this is Hollywood, they also contract Evolvers to sell their products by making them somewhat famous and adored. Fake publicity stunts, social media pr and short popular movies are created to build fanbases.
This is up to the player's discretion. You do not, and likely should not in most cases, follow canon history but feel free to have influences from canon that shape your characters. We ask that in the creation of your character you at least take the history under varied consideration. The Evolver universe takes no claim in any set Marvel verse, be it movie or otherwise, but does take hints from 616 Canon. Do keep in mind most of what we know as 616 has been immensely altered in our universe. This will, of course, impact your characters when you are considering their backstories and how it relates and fits into the Evolver universe.
We will not accept radical differences such as gender or power changes. However, touches on personality are accepted and history may be completely original to your character and the game. You have the freedom to play any canon character from a much younger age, similar or elder variation.
The short answer is we do accept the aforementioned canon characters in the Evolver universe. They will just have to be adjusted for the game. Evolvers who have time-traveled from another universe aren't allowed at this time, but as characters from this universe develop and items are unlocked (see Powers & Original Features), characters from this universe could be able to do some variation of time manipulation and/or travel.
We strongly suggest players who plan to apply for these characters reach out to the mods and any players that could be impacted. It's very well possible for characters to have adult children if their ages are reasonable and all players agree to the storyline. Human cloning isn't a thing in the Evolver universe, as of now. This means you'll have to get creative if bringing in a canon clone, or simply adjust the character's backstory to fit the game.
Major plot will be driven by Mod decisions as well as character actions causing equal reactions and the relying storyline that follows. However, keep in mind that god-modding is strictly forbidden and you, under no circumstance, are allowed to do so. Character deaths are not allowed without mod permission. Characters do not have the same level of power or control as their 616 counterparts. We are putting a lot of trust in to the members, and are believing they will take the responsible route. The game is slash and adult friendly, but let's not go over board, okay?
In this universe, we take comic book canon as our inspirational ground, but we are by no means limited by it. We want to build our own original world off of it. Players are encouraged to spread their creative wings and create something that's never existed before. As long as it's consistent within the operating logics of the universe, you're free to explore!
Though, it's been decades since the alien invasion, not much is known about where the alien species originated from. It was discovered later the cosmic radiation from the alien ships and technology endowed certain percentages of the population in Los Angeles with varying skills due to an irradiation of bacteria from Earth and certain DNA triggered by the combination of everything happening from space exposure to personal stress levels. It's now believed what's coined as X-genes were manipulated into the genetic make-up of Evolvers pre-birth through their lineage. The seamless integration of Evolvers into human culture was likely another strategy to mitigate negative effects when their powers would eventually manifest.
By design, each individual Evolver's powers will manifest when their biology is ready to handle the super abilities. The body reads the energy field and instinctively activates the dormant genes when optimal conditions are achieved. This could happen at any age of an Evolver's life after the individual turns 18-years-old. This means Evolvers could go decades as an adult without any signs of a mutation until their individual dormant abilities respectively become active. Dormant X-genes may also be induced externally by subjecting the person to varied intensity of gamma rays. More info is available in the link "Powers & Stuff", but the manifestation or loss of powers is entirely up to player's discretion.
Characters may develop any powers that you believe would benefit their character development. As a character comes into the game, all canon powers and items are available to them, pending your discretion on when to bring each ability into play. By instilling the IC device of "dormant genes", we hope to also give players the freedom to create a character that is inspired by their comicbook persona, but that is an original creation for the Evolver universe in itself. This means that through unlocking "Silk Parachutes" (see: Powers & Stuff), players may add non-canon items to their character's roster.
There is no Xavier's Institute or Danger Room in this universe, at this time, which makes this part the most fun. Get creative. Maybe Scott has to walk around with bandages on his eyes until he finds ruby quartz? Maybe your character goes to another character's back alley to do energy blast target practice? Your character could also receive "help" from The Sentinel if your character is one to trust the organization. Keep in mind, The Sentinel program does not train Evolvers for superhero team activities, but more so, allow them a space to get their powers under their control without causing calamity in Supe City.
Egyptian diplomat to the United States En Sabah Nur has been missing since November 2022. There are unverified reports (mainly from Mojo Media) Nur was the first documented Evolver to manifest powers in Los Angeles. According to reports, the Egyptian diplomat was placed into custody by federal authorities, and allegedly experimented on by the U.S. government months before more Evolvers began popping up in Los Angeles. It's believed En Sabah was killed while in custody. Federal or city leaders will not confirm this information, calling it a conspiracy theory. Nur's missing case remains active.
Yes. They can be a police officer with District X station, seek help from The Sentinel, or be an educator or student at Claremont College. Maybe your character works for real places like City Hall, Starbucks, or at Walmart. Your character can also take over real positions under already established orgs. If you want your character to be the police captain at District X station (see link: Places), go right ahead. Claremont College could use a Dean of Students, if that suits you, too. High profile positions like mayors, police and fire chiefs, governor, etc. are not available for play, and are filled by the real-life person who holds the position.
As this is an AU game, reading the comics or watching the movies isn't necessary to be able to play in this game. If you are unfamiliar with a character, we think just skimming through their Marvel Wiki profile or reading just the powers and stats will be enough to give you something to work with and play your character decently. However, as it's AU, we encourage you to be creative and bring your character to life in however you choose to interpret them. Since the comic book world has many, many writers and many, many retcons and changes with their line up, we're pretty sure we'll be okay with almost any way someone plays a character!
Your canon hero can be bad or your bad-doer can be good. Earth is a planet of free will, so whatever allegiance bound your canon choice may or may not be adhered by them in Evolver universe. At this time, though, your character cannot be a uber-villain bent on world domination, but we do allow anti-heroes, gray characters, and even neutral characters. Also, just as complicated and indecisive humans could be, so can Evolvers. It's perfectly possible for your character to have a change of heart.
Whichever road you decide to take, we would love to see creative spins on heroes and villains. Perhaps in this universe your canon 'hero' has experienced challenges that would lead them to have motivations for going a different way. Or maybe you would like to explore the redeeming qualities of your canon villain by developing the reasoning behind why they originally went left on the moral scale. It is completely up to player discretion. We encourage all new creative avenues.
As of now, there are no official superhuman teams created in the Evolver universe. However, as the plot develops and things become more dangerous for the community, as they always do in these game, there will be official teams created. That will be down the line. But, we know these Evolvers will soon jump at the opportunity to exercise their powers for good or bad. Certain groups will organically be drawn to each other in-game, which could create opportunity for team events and characters working together in some way. Feel free to name those groups, if you want, but they would be amatuers in comparison to their Marvel counterparts.
This game will mostly deal with Evolvers trying to live a normal life, but there will be Mod-driven plots where certain characters are randomly grouped together as a team. We are excited to see how characters organically build with one another. Your Mods are here if you need any help during this process.
Evolver takes place in real time and the location is the Greater Los Angeles area. This large metropolitan area is at your disposal for your characters to thrive in. For interactive purposes, your character must live in or near Supe City in the Boyle Heights neighborhood. Though game events may span worldwide, LA will be the main hub for all characters in the game. Our cast revolves around the City of Angels. The geographical scope of the game has to do purely with logistic purposes of interaction. Real world events also are applicable in the Evolver universe. We plan to keep up with current events and adapt them as we see fit.
Albeit a few burgeoning anti-Evolver groups have recently emerged online, Evolver's existence is known and generally accepted. Though, the existence of Evolvers has been met with disbelief by the majority of the world outside North America. Artificial intelligence is still something being grasped by society. Some humans are either blissfully ignorant or in denial. Real life superhumans are still beyond most people's grid of understanding. With mass media and some world governments working overtime to cover up and discredit anyone who vouches for these events, life is per usual around Earth for most people.
As you may have noticed, we're big on player discretion. Mods won't police personal or small-scale plots. We do ask, however, for players to keep gamewide cohesion in mind when rehearsing bigger events or plots that may affect a large group of people. If you plan to wipe out a neighborhood in LA, for example, we'd like a heads-up to make sure it fits in with the gamewide plot, as well as respects the boundaries of other players' personal plots. If there's ever an issue with a plot, the moderators will approach you personally to try to come up with a mutually satisfying compromise.
All the powers, items and abilities your CV claim presents in the comics are available to you. They don't need to be unlocked with activity points and may be activated by the player at whichever point in their character development. We do encourage the activation to be spaced out, so that each newly activated power/item may be explored to its full potential. But ultimately it is up to the player to define the pace of their character's evolution.
Once you activate a power OOC, the IC explanation for how it comes through is that your character has achieved a "mutational manifestation" where the abilities encoded in their dormant X-genes become active. Mutant powers could also disappear, but that usually only occurs in the early stages of a manifestation until an Evolver is able to sustain their mutational manifestation. It's up to the player to decide what manifests, what disappears and when.
Once you're in the game, please visit our Activation post to request the activation of new powers and items prior to bringing them into play. In keeping track of all activated powers and items, the moderators are able to monitor the pace of each character's development. It also gives us an idea of what resources are available when designing the gamewide plot to be inclusive of as many individual characters as possible.
Inspired by the sponsor gifts sent to Hunger Games contestants in the arena, players may use any "activity points" they racked up to unlock "Silk Parachutes". Activity Points will be earned with any updates beyond the minimum activity requirements listed in the "Rules". A detailed view of how many points each type of update can be found in our Members Area, which is open to all players in the game.
"Silk parachutes" (SPs) are bonus items (not powers) available to the players beyond their character's canon resources. With this feature, players are able to temporarily or permanently unlock any items that their character doesn't present/own in the comic books. The only SPs that cannot be unlocked are items that may lead to the destruction of the universe (eg. Infinity Gems or the M'kraan Crystal).
We encourage writers to retrieve SPs one at a time and include them in their plots to their full potential. Once you've unlocked a SP OOC, the IC explanation is that your character's DNA activated a specific dormant gene and the item was biologicially deemed necessary for the advancement of your character. Specific reasoning of how these items will come in handy for your character is up to each individual writer.
